Alcohol Policy Support by Socio-demographic Characteristics, Life Satisfaction, and Problem Drinking

|
This study investigated the alcohol policy support by socio-demographic characteristics, life satisfaction and problem drinking. The subjects, 3,500 males and females, aged between 16 and 65 residing in Korea, reported drinking at least once for in the last 6 months prior to survey. The study was carried out for 7 months from June through December 2012. There were significant differences in socio-demographic characteristics and problem drinking by gender, age and the highest level of education: high in males by gender, 19-29 years old of age and high school graduates in the level of education. Overall, the alcohol regulatory policy was supported by females, old ages, married couples and cohabitants. For the correlations among life satisfaction, problem drinking and alcohol policy support, problem drinking showed a negative correlation with life satisfaction and alcohol policy support; the more problematic their drinking was, the more negative position they got on life satisfaction and alcohol policy support. There was no correlation between life satisfaction and alcohol policy support. In the analysis to find factors affecting alcohol policy support, gender was a determinant for overall alcohol policy preference, age affected sale and promotion restricting policy, problem drinking affected sale and promotion restricting policy and price and tax policy, whilst level of education affected drink driving regulating policy. In the socio-demographic characteristics shown in the results of the study, gender, age and marital status turned out to be important variables showing differences in alcohol policy support.
